You open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. You type a question. You get a decent answer. You move on.
Sound familiar? If so, you are using maybe 10% of what these models can actually do. Not because the model is holding back, but because the way you ask determines the depth of what you receive.
After spending 20+ years in technology and working extensively with AI systems over the past several years, I have discovered something fundamental about how large language models organize knowledge. It is not a flat database. It is not a search engine. It is a multi-dimensional knowledge space, and the quality of your output depends entirely on which coordinates you give it.
I call this the 3D Prompting Framework, and it has fundamentally changed how I, and my team of 450+ engineers at GeekyAnts, interact with AI.
The Circle Experiment: Try This Right Now
Before I explain the framework, I want you to try something. Open any LLM — Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or any other model — and type these three prompts one after another:
Prompt 1: "Explain a circle to a 4th grade student"
What you get: A circle is a round shape with no corners. Think of a pizza, a wheel, or a coin. If you take a piece of string, pin one end down, and draw all the way around, you make a circle. Every point on the edge is the same distance from the center.
Prompt 2: "Explain a circle to a 12th grade student"
What you get: A circle is the set of all points in a plane equidistant from a fixed center point. Defined by x² + y² = r² in Cartesian coordinates. Key properties include circumference (2πr), area (πr²), tangent lines perpendicular to the radius, and the relationship between central angles and arc length.
Prompt 3: "Explain a circle to a mathematics PhD"
What you get: S¹ as a one-dimensional compact manifold, its fundamental group π₁(S¹) ≅ ℤ, universal covering via the exponential map ℝ → S¹. In algebraic geometry, it is the vanishing set of x² + y² − 1 over various fields. As a Lie group, SO(2) acting on ℝ².
Same subject. Three vastly different outputs. The LLM had all three versions stored inside it the entire time. The only thing that changed was the expertise coordinate you provided.
Try it yourself: Open your preferred LLM and run the three circle prompts above. Notice how the vocabulary, depth, mathematical rigor, and conceptual framing change completely. That difference is not magic — it is dimensional navigation.
Dimension 1: Expertise Level
This is the first axis of the framework. Every LLM has been trained on content across a massive spectrum of expertise — from children's encyclopedia entries to cutting-edge research papers. When you do not specify an expertise level, the model defaults to a generic middle ground: safe, correct, but rarely insightful.
The key insight: you already know what to ask — you just don't tell the LLM at what level to answer. And that single missing variable is the difference between a Wikipedia summary and a genuinely useful expert response.
Dimension 2: Domain Knowledge
The second axis is the domain — the specific field or context in which you want the answer framed. This is where things get truly interesting.
Let's take the same subject, "circle," keep the expertise level constant at "professional," and change only the domain:
- Mathematics — Equations, coordinate geometry, proofs of properties, relationship to conic sections
- GPU Engineering — Rasterization algorithms, how to approximate curves with fragments, anti-aliasing at edges, Bresenham's circle algorithm
- Architecture — Load distribution in circular structures, compression rings, dome mechanics, how forces travel through curved surfaces
- UX Design — Visual hierarchy, focal points, how the eye moves in circular layouts, button and icon design using circular containment
- Manufacturing — CNC machining tolerances for circular parts, roundness measurement, GD&T callouts, cylindricity vs circularity
Same subject. Same expertise level. Completely different knowledge surfaces because the domain changed. The LLM has all of these perspectives inside it simultaneously — the domain coordinate determines which facet you see.
Dimension 3: The Subject Itself
Now we arrive at the full 3D model. The third axis is what most people start and stop with: the subject or topic of the question.
When you combine all three dimensions, something remarkable happens. You are no longer asking a question. You are navigating to a precise point in the model's knowledge space. You are essentially telling the LLM:
"Go to the intersection of this subject, at this expertise level, through this domain lens, and give me what's there."
A generic prompt like "Explain a circle" is a single point in one dimension. Adding expertise level makes it 2D. Adding domain makes it 3D. Each dimension you add exponentially narrows the output and dramatically increases its usefulness.
The Quality Impact: From Generic to Surgical
Here is how output quality scales as you add each dimension:
- Generic Prompt ("Explain a circle") — ~25% precision
- + Expertise ("...to a PhD") — ~55% precision
- + Domain ("...in GPU engineering") — ~80% precision
- + Specific Task ("...for shader optimization") — ~95% precision
Each additional dimension you specify roughly doubles the precision of the output. The percentages are illustrative, but the pattern is real — I have verified it across hundreds of use cases with my engineering teams.

1D (subject only): "How to improve database performance?" — Generic tips: indexing, caching, query optimization. Things you already know.
2D (+expertise): "How would a senior DBA improve PostgreSQL performance for a write-heavy OLTP workload?" — WAL tuning, checkpoint configuration, connection pooling with PgBouncer, partitioning strategies.
3D (+domain): "As a senior DBA working with PostgreSQL 16 on AWS RDS, how would you diagnose and fix replication lag for a write-heavy fintech platform processing 50K transactions/second?" — Specific RDS parameter group settings, logical vs physical replication tradeoffs at that scale, Aurora migration consideration, monitoring with pg_stat_replication.
Example 2: Business Strategy
1D (subject only): "How to grow a SaaS company?" — Textbook advice: product-market fit, content marketing, freemium model.
2D (+expertise): "How would an experienced B2B SaaS CEO approach growth after reaching $5M ARR?" — Sales-assisted motion, enterprise tier pricing, customer success investment, NDR focus.
3D (+domain): "As a CEO of a B2B developer tools company at $5M ARR with a product-led growth motion, how would you layer on an enterprise sales team without disrupting the existing PLG flywheel?" — Hybrid PLG-sales playbook, PQL scoring models, sales-assist triggers from usage data, organizational structure for both motions.
The 3-Question Checklist
Before you type your next prompt into any LLM, ask yourself three questions:
- What is my subject? The topic or concept you need information about. Be specific: not "databases" but "PostgreSQL index optimization."
- What expertise level do I need? Who should be explaining this to me? A textbook introduction, a working professional's perspective, or a world-class expert's deep analysis?
- What is my domain context? What field am I applying this in? The same concept manifests differently in fintech vs healthcare vs gaming. Domain context unlocks practical, applicable answers.
Stop thinking of LLMs as search engines that you ask questions. Start thinking of them as vast knowledge spaces that you navigate with coordinates. The more precise your coordinates, the more precise the knowledge you extract. The 3D framework gives you those coordinates.
Why This Works: The Knowledge Space Perspective
Large language models are trained on the entire spectrum of human knowledge — from a child's first science book to the latest arxiv papers. All of that knowledge exists simultaneously inside the model: layered, interconnected, and contextual.
When you type a generic prompt, you are asking the model to average across this entire space. The result is accurate but bland — the statistical mean of all possible answers, useful for no one in particular.
When you specify coordinates using the 3D framework, you are not asking the model to work harder. You are asking it to work in a specific region of its knowledge space. You are filtering a massive neural network down to the subset of patterns that matter for your exact situation.
This is why AI-native professionals will outperform AI-assisted ones. AI-assisted means using the tool. AI-native means understanding the knowledge topology of the tool and navigating it intentionally.
